The diocese covers Hidalgo, Starr, Cameron and Willacy counties. Its schools page lists Our Lady of Sorrows School in McAllen (PreK 3 to grade 8), St. Joseph School in Edinburg, Oratory Academy in Pharr (PreK 3 to grade 8), Immaculate Conception School in Rio Grande City (PreK 3 to grade 8) and Juan Diego Academy in Mission (grades 9-12), alongside its schools in Brownsville and Harlingen.
All of those Hidalgo and Starr County campuses were in the state finder on our check date; the Mission high school appears there as San Juan Diego Catholic Regional High School. San Martin de Porres Catholic School in Weslaco was listed as well.
The diocese's own TEFA page lays out the eligibility rules, the lottery and its priority tiers, and the rule that siblings who apply together are approved together. It also reminds families that a student who uses the account can't be enrolled full time in a public or charter school that same year.
We did not find a diocese-wide tuition assistance fund for these schools, so aid beyond TEFA comes from each school. In the state finder, Oratory Academy reported that scholarships are available and St. Joseph in Edinburg reported sibling discounts. Ask each school's office about parishioner rates and need-based help before you enroll.
Combining it with other sources
Valley families rarely rely on one source. This one generally combines with the school's own discounts and scholarships and with at least one other source on our list. The funding check works out the right mix for your child.
